Transformation of odds and ends
by Misik Kim
After working, many
pieces are left.
I did not throw
away them.
Put these pieces in
the box and were stored.
So there are a lot
of boxes in my studio.
Some of them are
very old and are forgotten.
One day in the
vacation, I opened these boxes.
So many memories of
my works are there.
Recently I try to
work with these pieces to.....
Thanks to all of
Viewpoints9 Artists.
It is like long
journey to me.
It is hard,
surprise and fresh ........ to me.
Now I am waiting
next trip with Viewpoint9 .
Thanks again.

IF……..
by Misik Kim

"If........", ©2013, Misik Kim
I've never felt this challenge much harder then before.
Easy to start, but felt increasingly heavy.
To participate in this like challenge was first experience
for me.
I've been very difficult from the first challenge.
Sometimes these challenges came with pleasure or stress.
But now, eight works and valuable experience remains to me.
However, this experience will stay with precious memories in
my work
If I thought it is too difficult and so I didn't attend, I
will not have this feeling.
It is happyness.

From old fabrics
by Misik Kim
Thanks for all of you.
It was a great
pleasure to read the posts you wrote for me.
This opportunity was a
chance for me to think about the tradition again
old methods, old fabrics.....
I was thinking about
the reinterpretation of thetradition and to use it to my work.
I used Mosi (Korean linen) and
silk organza in
my work. All fabric is from used Hanbok (korean dress).
Thanks for all of you.

Image from tradition
from: Misik Kim
I have
been teaching quilt at one university museum during several years.
So I can have a chance
to see some old collections
and nice exhibitions in
that museum.
I think it's a fortune for me and also gives me a
relaxation in busy city life.
Every country has good old traditions and we can learn much
from that traditions.
Recently some designs derived from old traditions are used in
many products and have
good effects.
So I selected subject of
this work from old traditions, "image from tradition".
I wish it could be a good opportunity to see our old
times.
Challenge 7: Image from tradition

The remaining pieces
by Misik Kim
There are a lot of pieces of fabrics in my room.
The pieces that are left over after I complete the work....
They are the pieces of fabric I couldn't throw
them in the
trash,
Many different shapes, different colors of
pieces are in
plastic bags.
One day,
Open the one of
the plastic bags,
Sewing these
pieces is created
another story.
It is
special for me.

Tal ( 탈 : Korean Mask)
by Misik Kim
Korean masks have a long tradition with use in a variety of
contexts.
They
were used in war, on both soldiers and their horses; ceremonially,
for
burial rites in jade and bronze and for shamanistic ceremonies to
drive
away evil spirits; to remember
the
faces of great historical figures in death masks; and in the arts,
particularly
in ritual dances, courtly, and
theatrical plays. The present uses are as miniature masks for tourist
souvenirs, or on cell-phones
where
they hang as good-luck talismans.
There are
various kinds of Korean masks and performances
talchum is just one of dozens of styles of Korean masks.
And It
could be characterized as a Korean dance performed while wearing a mask,
Many
different regions have their own unique forms of the art; in fact, some styles
belong
to a single small village.
The
masks range from fairly realistic to outlandish and monstrous. Some are large,
exaggerated circles. Others are oval, or even triangular, with long and
pointed chins.
Many of the finest masks are carved from alder wood, The masks are attached to a hood of black cloth, which serves to hold the mask in place, and also resembles hair.
I am so interested in Korean traditional masks for a long time.
I am trying to express them in my work.

colors in my memories: Misik responds
I do not know why I am
not sensitive to the
scent.
But Many scent are located in my memories.
If you go chasing the scent, memories of my childhood are
there.
Grandma's old sewing machine, old sewing box .....
We live in four seasons, each season has a scent of its own.
Specifically, the Autumn seems to make people more
sensitive.
Autumn comes in Korea now.
It seems to be a season of memories.
There are many reminiscences in my memory.
past memories of scents, like the smell of burning leaves in
the autumn…..
It is a good memory.
Even a good thing? Like the smell of coffee freshly fried
and smells of ripe hazelnut.
This is Changduck Palace in Seoul.
I went there and took the pictures last fall.
The royal family lived there.
It is called
secret garden.
I like this place.

"Beyond the mountains, the small town story"
Put the picture of this challege on the wall of the my studio.
watching it for a long time,
A lot of imagination.....
Beyond the mountains, what?
Imaginary town was peaceful and quiet.
These kind of challenge works are the first time for me.
The space 18" * 24" was a new challenge to me, too.

The Landscape
by Misik Kim
I saw the image of Lin's challenge, that comes to mind first was
gray color.
I
felt comfortable, like the landscape of the countryside of my country.
I prefer to express with colors than realistic expression.
To read various artist's
different approaches is a very interesting thing.
This
is also a challenge to me.
How
to approach and how to interpret.....
all
these things are interesting for me.
I
remember this work “ Christmas in the town” and other works.

The detail of “In the Mt Bookhan”
I remembered my works associated with landscape.
Then I try to express different direction.
It is my challenge.
I will go to Taiwan to participate in the Exhibition TIAE
2012 in the middle of this month.
I’m looking forward to seeing Sue Dennis, Mary Pal, and
Patricia Gould in there.

나는 이번 challenge를 하면서
다시금 우리 것에 대한 것을 생각해본다.
기호를 보면서 문득 떠올랐던 ㄱ ㄴ ㄷ……..
Korean Alphabet…
While I am working for this challenge, I think about our
identity.
I don’t know Why I am thinking about it.
ㄱ ㄴ ㄷ… are Korean Alpabet
ㄱ + ㅏ
= 가
ㄴ + ㅗ
= 고
ㄷ + ㅜ
= 두
This gave me the opportunity to be thinking about our character.

Misik's Response to the pi-Challenge
Unfamiliar with these things for me, but it is clear that it's interesting.
When I read Betty's challenge. what is it?
This is Pi. a mathematical symbol.
When I saw it first time, I realize it is kind of the character.
It was reminiscent of the character of our country.
This is not as a mathematical symbol to me.
It gave me the motivation to think.
To express this feeling in my mind is not easy.
But many things are already were drawing in my mind.
It is my challenge to express them in my work.

Misik's Response to the First Challenge
Viewpoints9 give me a new world.
Even if I can't understand how to progress well, but I will try to follow what other members do.
I always try to express the image that come to my mind in my everyday life.
it is so difficult to express something I felt when I listen to music.
It's first time to do it to me.
But this is my new challenge and excitement.
I have to go China two times in March.
So I am so busy mentally and physically both.
I participated in the Shanghai Quilt Festival last week and I am going to Beijing
to participate the conference & Exhibition in Tsinghua University by the organizer
of Korean works.
However, in what the trip to escape the familiar and experience new things look forward to me would be helpful.
After returning to the everyday life, I think to have probably afford to do work in next month.
Vivaldi was reminded the school days.
